after some research it turns out the difference between this version and the quickcam vision pro 9000 was that the autofocusing is done in the hardware of this camera and not the driver.
unlike the superficially similar but less expensive quickcam pro 9000 they do light balance and focus through camera hardware.
as another reviewer suggested, however, it is possible that my hardware is the main factor limiting performance.
if you have fairly recent hardware and are running leopard this camera gives the best picture i've ever encountered on a mac.
a few extra dollars spent on quality hardware will soon be forgotten, once you see how well everything works with this.one more piece of advice: follow the installation instructions to the letter.

excellent hardware
it is higher resolution than most webcams at 1280 x 1024 and has vista driver support.it also has other nicer small features like the privacy switch which covers the lens when you don't want the
email technical support and was told it was hardware limitation (the point of view of this webcam is smaller than that of other webcams - don't know if it's true).
in protected mode, out of protected mode, install portion of the software first, then the remainder of it, finishing the install with plugging in the hardware, with no other usb devices plugged in,
in terms of hardware, you get a basic camera that can capture at 640x480 at 15fps, 320x240 at 30fps, or take still photos at 1.3 megapixels (1280x960).
as always with this kind of hardware/software, it has it's limitations but i thought it worked well enough.
all technology software/hardware has it's hiccups and once it had an issue when using with skype, but never on its own.
other thoughts: the software is extraorinarilly bloated and the continual prompts to install live messenger have forced me to resolve to never buy hardware from miscrosoft again!
overall, it's a small, decent, and attractive piece of hardware.
the usual hardware installation process goes something like this:
as is often the case with microsoft hardware the basic design and intended functionality is very good.
the only saving grace is the form factor but the hardware performs so badly, you'd rather find another option than put up with it.
the hardware and software installed flawlessly and it has been used with skype and windows live messenger.
the hardware/software is rated for a p4 2.4.
the "physical" hardware works great and i stand by the 5 rating...
it was clear that logitech wanted to make my system (modern, powerful, lots of memory, etc) the scapegoat without any thought that their hardware/software/firmware might be defective.
