reading the documentation it looks equally well suited for dictation or music when used with an external (higher quality) mic or other audio input with excellent audio (see one possibility below).
since the recorder is also designed to be used as an mp3 music player, it might have been nice if they had added a random play option.
(not pro audio musician level..) it has a very good sound capture.
i use it during my music class so i can record our session.
as others mentioned, the external speaker is junk, but the sound with the supplied earphones is decent and with a good set of ear/head phones, both music and voice recordings sound great.
setting it up was simply a matter of putting it on a music stand across the room and pressing rec.
i've been playing music for years, but i will readily admit that i don't know much about recording and get frustrated with it very easily.
but you get what you pay for, and you get a nice little recording device, perfect for most applications, epically recording musical ideas while away from the studio.
you can even slow down or speed up the recordings after they are made, with no pitch change, although i did notice that the slowed recordings exhibited noticeable artifacting at the slower settings,
i use it to practice stories i tell, and make scratch recordings of music.
also, i keep this recorder handy for any musical inspiration that pops into my head why driving, (closet musician).
pretty good recording streamed music (mono), if recording through a mic jack cable, rather than the built-in mic.
this product does exactly what it says it does.it is able to record sounds at very far distances and play back is really clear.i think it is very convenient that there are different folders to keep
* despite many attempts, i could not get mp3 music files from my mac to play on this unit.
the ws-210s is sold as a stereo voice recorder, but it also does quite well with music.
--the ws-311m can also be used as a music player, though i don't really care about that.
you cant listen back on the internal speaker with any satisfaction, so for music, its essential that you run in thru some kind of power/speaker situation.
i read some reviews (here and elsewhere) saying this could be used to make decent recordings of live music, using the ultra-high quality mode and an external mic.
if i wanted to record music, evps, or for dictation into speech recognition software, i would use the maximum quality mode, since it is better at capturing higher frequencies and may better capture
i bought this as a means to record musical ideas, melodies, or lyrics while on the road.
you can add a plug-in stereo mic (but don't need to) and make amazing quality music recordings with a device that fits in your pocket!
other thoughts: not recommended for music recording (recitals, etc) - in other words, not recommended for more than it's supposed to be good for (quelle surprise).
i bought this recorder to record music.
but if you do own an olympus ws-110, and what music you pretty much have to convert your audio files into wma.
i was quite concerned that my interview would be obstructed by the blaring music.
voices are ok but music is extremely muffled.
i wanted a recorder that would let me hear my music lesson practice sessions.
