yes, sony's recorder did have less background noise, but the professor's voicealways sounded a little farther away, like they were in the next room.

however, keep in mind that various variables will affect the quality of the recording: how close you are to the speaker, the position of the recorder, the size of the room, etc so it's hard to judge
