all in all, the recording is good and the product is good as i use it to record sermons and it does the job.
while i wish it recorded mp3 rather than wma, it does a great job- sound quality is great for the package, and gets you what you need.
summary: i have only tried one other dvr, but this seems to do the job, and it is fairly inexpensive.

built in stereo microphones will do a good job for lecture recording and does not have a problem picking up background noises, not as bad as other recorders.

i bought a voice recorder sony (not digital) but due to my job requirement, i have changed it for olympus vn-960pc 128 mb digital voice recorder which has pc link (mandatory in my case).
this little recorder is wonderful for my job as curator at a small historical museum.
and olympus has done a masterful job with this particular device.
i use it at my job to record interviews as well as record meetings, and the sound quality for both is very good.
i guess, it depends on what you need this recorder for, always have some "back up" if this is apart of your long term job.

i can say that, if the recorder dies while recording, it tends to do a good job of closing the file that was being recorded so that you don't lose your existing data.
