It comes with a little bottle of cleaner and is ready to use right out of the box. You can get two tanks from one little bottle, and refills can be obtained online, and I have gotten refills at target. from Amazon.com So my husband and I were looking for a compact carpet cleaner to take out some black spots that were showing on our apartment's carpet. Most compact cleaners on here have less than stellar reviews but the Bissell Little Green Deep Cleaner had the most promising reviews. But lets face it, that's just how carpet cleaners work, the big carpet cleaners are heavy enough that you don't have to push down. This little things works just as well as my big machine when you apply enough pressure. Some reviewers have complained of leaks as well as odors building up. I think both of these can be completely avoided with a bit of care in cleaning up the machine after you use it.
