actually the usb ports on it work fine without any extra power (usb cable only) but for all the flash drives to work, you need to use the extra power source (ac adapter), which is a bit annoying.

it plugs in the back of the desktop and sits up nicely on the monitor shelf, connected by two cables (usb and power from it's ac/dc adapter).

since my pda, cell phone and bluetooth headset comes with usb charge cable, i can charge them without using their power adaptors and thus saved a lot of space, and i don't have to turn the computer

additionally, having the majority of the usb ports on the back side of the unit hides the various dongles (for keyboard/mouse, etc.) from the casual observer nicely.
