the unit is self powered, meaning it doesn't rely on the computer's usb connection to power any peripherals connected to the hub.
4 extra ports, usb 2.0 i have noticed people posting that this product dose not work.
it works great to expand my usb capacity on my mac.
my laptop only has a 1.1 usb port and it won't charge the player.
for my older pc this made it easy to access a usb 2 port without crawling around to the back of the computer.
i use my usb hub every day and it works fine with every device i plug into it.
i originally purchased this hub to make it easier to use multiple usb devices with my laptop while using it at my desk at home.
i use it when my laptop is on my desk so that i only have one usb plug to plug in and out.
it was very useful (and necessary) for my laptop which only had 3 usb ports, but now is just a convenience with my desktop so i don't have to go behind the tower.
since this hub comes with it's own power supply it charges the player.
