after trying various steps, i was able to get the software to work and it would hibernate or shutdown (i tried both) my pc in the event it went to battery.

on the plus side, you can run this ups without the software and rely on the the hardware beeping as to how much power time you have in the event of an outage.

in a simulated blackout it kept my 21.3" monitor and desktop pc running for over 30 minutes and then gently shut everything down.
i have had three of these units for the past 5-6 years (one for my pc, one for the wife's and one for the tivo & cable box).
pros: reliable, compact, plenty of bells and whistles, reasonable price.
i purchased three for my mac and pc at home.
there seen to be quite a few dealers selling refurbished apc products but this may be a reflection of apc's popularity rather than the poor reliability of their brand.
i would not run any pc without a ups to protect it.

first its making use of a too long unused port thats just wasting away on todays pc's, and second for a device thats never unplugged why waste a usb port?
