Camcorder tripods are essential for amateurs and professionals alike, and improve results with steadier, smoother filming. When shopping for a camcorder tripod, consider the following:
- The
3 Heights (minimum, maximum, collapsed)
For the traveler, a short collapsed height will be essential. Maximum height is also important as filming while standing can be important for your back as well as the action you're filming. No one wants to be hunched over for a 2 hour sports game!
- Pan/Tilt
performance
Pan/Tilt performance will directly affect your filming quality. If you’ll be filming sports games that go end to end rapidly such as basketball, a tripod that supports wide panning angles is important. Tilt allows you to move the camera vertically and is important if you’re filming from higher ground, such as the grandstands.
- Weight
Low weight products that are well built are ideal as they are easier to lug on family trips or to pack when traveling by plane. Be careful with the weight, however, because cheaper products made from inferior materials can result in an unstable stand or worse, be easily broken.
