The Vanguard MG-3 tripod is well made and is one of the rare budget tripods with a reasonable "fluid" like pan and tilt head. It is not quite in the league of the Velbon Sherpa 538 but is is $100 cheaper. from Amazon.com I have been looking at under-$100 tripods for years, and haven't found ANY that give a smooth pan until now- they all stick and jerk.
