Keeping the legs as unextended as possible (you might have to use a very low stool if you have a refractor) helps very much. The other thought for those with handy hands is to fashion clamps for the upper portion of the legs. I also undid the mount from the bottom of the tripod and took apart the azimuth assembly. Typical import thick cheap nasty grease and metal filings everywhere. from Amazon.com One is already fairly loose after only a few on/off cycles and I expect it won't be too long before the either loose grip altogether or crack. Fortunately, the shafts are standard so the knobs can be replaced with virtually any other knob. Also note that an adapter is necessary to mount a 1/4x20 L bracket (common to most small scopes) to the Vixen-compatible dovetail mount. from Amazon.com Overall, this tripod is well-made and fairly priced.
