I am a semi-pro photographer who uses my tripod to shoot landscapes/panoramas, architecture, portraits and even sports. Despite its weight, this is the most versatile and easy to use tripod out there. When combined with the Manfrotto 488RC2 midi ball head with rapid connect system you'll take all that flexibility to a whole new level. What to like: quick set up to catch that amazing shot, sturdy build, built in level, rapid release 3 tier legs, independant leg spread angles which is perfect when you are shooting with prime lenses like myself and need a tripod flexible enough to get the right shot everytime unlike the cheap Quantaray tripods that can take 10 minutes or longer to set up to capture the shot at the right angle, rapid sliding center column and horizontal center column feature that lets you swing the head to a verticle position without having to remove the head. from Amazon.com I selected the Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs as a reasonable compromise between the expensive Manfrotto carbon fiber models and the even more expensive Gitzo pro models. I was looking for a 3-section tripod that would first provide a sturdy, stable platform, while still not being too heavy to carry, and also being quick to set up. from Amazon.com Loved it except for one thing... I had to extend the neck to get the camera to eye level (or hunch down to get to it without the neck extended). With the 055, that problem goes away. The slightly added weight and collapsed length is moot compared to the added convenience you get of not having to slouch to look into the camera without extending the neck. from Amazon.com Haven't used it with legs spread and center column extended horizontally yet, but I am certain that it will perform well when I do. A little heavy, but it takes mass to create stability and resist the wind. I use it with a Manfrotto 322RC2 head, Canon 40D and 70-200 F4L lens (with tripod ring) and there are no balance or stability issues. Considered a lighter model for carrying outdoors, but ended up with a Manfrotto monopod for those trips. from Amazon.com Now I can see why. Its rock solid (enough to hold my 30D w/ battery grip, 580EX, and 70-200 f/2.8), very adjustable, and a reasonable weight (the people saying its too heavy are just weak). It also the usual oustanding Manfrotto quality. He recommends the Bogen 3001BD as the most affordable tripod which is still of good build quality. This recently has become the Bogen Manfrotto 190XPROB which is very, very similar to the 055XPROB.
