the middle shaft is threaded a few inches below the head which made its transport on the airplane in my backpack even easier.

dont buy this tripod if you are planning to use it w some heavy slr camera.

even though the manufacturer suggests not using this tripod for slrs, i have no problems using it with my cannon digital rebel slr, even with the 70-300mm telephoto.

but more importantly, i often don't want to advertise that i am carrying a slr by strapping a tripod to my bag or carrying it in my hand.

it's a little heavy for backpacking - might go with a carbon version instead if money isn't the deciding factor.

while attending an event at my daughters karate school i noticed one of the other parents were using a manfrotto monopod, which allowed him to rest his digital slr and focus on the action of board

he absolutely loves it, especially it's size when it "scopes" down so fits easily on his camera case backpack.

it fits inside my carry on luggage or backpack.

trash it and pick up a lashing strap at your local rei or backpacking shop.

all in all, highly recommended accessory for all compact slr and digicam users.

i find it easy to transport in my luggage and lightweight enough for hiking.
