i have left the setting on "3" and find that it toasts breads and buns a nice "toasted brown" color - and it does that very consistantly from slice to slice to slice.

the only thing making it four star instead of five star is that toast and bagels aren't the same color from top to bottom - not enough to affect flavor, just visual.
