because the exterior is metal, it gets very hot and can even burn you if you're not careful.
i bought this toaster after researching a kitchenaid model that was given to us for christmas (the kitchenaid did not have a cool touch exterior...a feature i felt was necessary for a metal product).
most of the expensive ones are heavy metal monstrosities that rival the size of a toaster oven.
its silver and black appearance and brushed metal finish give the unit a very modern look and feel.
