We bought this telescope as a birthday present for our 11 year old daughter. The tripod is very good for this price: very sturdy yet easy to point the telescope by unlocking the position and then tightening it at a new location with the knob on the arm. from Amazon.com This is a good telescope for starters. The assembly was pretty straight forward but I have found that the structure is not terribly rigid and the finder scope is almost impossible to set without moving the alignment off the object to view. from Amazon.com The Celestron 21061 Astromaster is a high quality telescope for beginners.
