it took some trial and error before figuring out that the jumper on my hdd (western digital wd1600 aajb) didn't need to be set to "master" or "slave" , but had to be totally removed.

directions i got did explicitly state: "note: it is a requirement that the ide hard drive or atapi device be configured as master before connecting the adapter."

i followed the adidesa directions, and changed the jumper settings on my ide drive to master, although i'm not sure if i needed to.

note that jumper setting on your ide drive should depend on its function, i.e., master, slave or single.

the hd from the old tower casing, first powering on the hd, then plugging in the usb cord to my laptop, and it was instantly recognized as a mass data drive, and i could see all files and folders.

drive, connect power to your drive, then plug the usb end of the cable into your machine or usb hub and after a few seconds your system should detect the drive as a standard usb mass storage device.

only stumbling block was making sure the drives were jumpered as master drives - just required a little googling to find the correct master setting for some of the drives that had been used as slave

its cheap, gave me access to my massive storage drive with no sata ports available and is exceptionally easy to install.
