This card certainly blows away the onboard audio (crummy IDT which offers very little customization) but it also blows away the old ZS-2. It is not mentioned anywhere, but the card uses the C-Media Oxygen processor, which is the top of the line C-Media product. Besides the processor, Asus also uses a glossed over version of C-Media's Xear 3D as the software interface for the card. And this is not a bad thing at all. from Newegg.com Pros: 24 bit sound. 7.1 channels, works with Windows 7 after driver install. Cons: The main reason I bought the card was to play video games, and even with the very latest drivers and patches from ASUS, World of Warcraft sounds horrible. Lots of popping and cracking and "static". from Newegg.com Pros: Audio WAS way better when using Windows Vista x64/ Windows 7 x64 RC compared to onboard Realtek HD Audio on the 680i. Cons: The menu is very CLUNKY, the built in presets for audio isn't very good and to fine tune the audio requires someone who knows a bit of how to work the equalizer. Even worse, Asus labels these cards as "Windows 7 Ready". They work for the RC 7100 Win 7, however in the RTM version of Windows 7, the drivers are BROKEN. from Newegg.com Got the optical out working immediately, which is more than I can say for Creative & Turtle Beach cards I have owned previously. Cons: I had to pull the Turtle Beach card out prior to installing this card. :-( Other Thoughts: I downloaded the latest drivers from Asus. Has internal SPDIF input to connect to a graphics card to produce HDMI audio and video. from Newegg.com As others have mentioned, the front panel use does not disable the speakers automatically, but they are disabled when you switch to the FP Headphone source, so it's just a little more work (but the audio control panel is so nice, you shouldn't mind a bit). Other Thoughts: Grab your drivers from the website, they're a little bit newer. I've had a lot of success with Asus over the years, and I could easily see myself using a newer model Xonar in the future... from Newegg.com On board audio has caused me nightmares in about 75% of my HTPC builds using the optical out (TOSLINK). If you have a good set of speakers like the Creative Gigaworks T20 series(which I am currently using) then adding this sound card won't make much of a difference from the on board audio.
