what i don't like about the ps-77cs shredder is that it shreds slower than my old ps-80 (probably because of the more powerful motor for shredding 12 sheets versus 5 sheets with my old ps-80).
but in the maintenance section of the intructions, it says to use the oil if motor sounds different or shredder stops running and it shows you how to use it.
that puts more stress on teh gears and motor.
the housing is made of cheap/flimzy plastic and buckles under the weight of the motor and cutting assembly.
i was disappointed, i had to un-clog the cd from the motors.
after going through three cheap department-store specials in as many years and having the motors fail in all of them, i broke down and bought a real shredder.
paper is chopped into tiny mulch, and the motor is rated to run for up to 10 minutes continuously before requiring time to cool down.
motor noise is very low, even at full load.
if you shred a lot of pages at once the overheat will turn the motor off.
with 5 sheets, i could hear the motor bog down a bit but it still did the job.
i had a low-end fellowes shredder before and its motor finally burned out.
the top (with the motor and blades) doesn't fit so the trigger switch (in the bottom basket) will activate the shredder, unless you exert pressure on the top.
item was returned due to the fact it could not even shred one sheet without over working motor.
finally, this motor seems very noisy and underpowered.
my old one did not have - a bin that could be removed without touching the shredder assembly itself, on wheels so i could move it around my office, a reverse/anti jam feature, and a quieter motor.
once out of the packaging, it was obvious the cutting heads and motor were heavy duty and contributed to the weight.
the motor overheated, the shredder jammed, and it no longer worked.
lastly, it has a touch sensor that will keep the motor off if touched by fingers---great if you have small children, or if you aren't paying much attention because you don't find watching paper shred
i was looking for a couple of specific features my old one did not have - a bin that could be removed without touching the shredder assembly itself, on wheels so i could move it around my office, a
it features a strong motor and shredder teeth.
it's much more than a fashion statement, with a a powerful motor, a great cross-cut shredder blade system, and more feet per minute of shredding capacity than similarly priced units.
cons: motor is a little noisy.
cons: slightly loud motor the bottom line: works for you, not against you.
strengths: powerful motor and blade assembly.
pros: nice sized bin, seems like it has a strong motor.
pros: really strong motor, even if the paper goes in crooked and gets wrinkled, the machine crunches right along.
the most that i've been able to run through it was 5, maybe barely 6, sheets but every time it sounded like the motor was choking on that load.
the motor starts when it senses something in the input slot.
the motor is heavy -- it definitely feels up to the task -- and it sits atop a plastic housing with a removable basket.
* very powerful and quite motor
you can tell it has a very powerful motor and i expect it to last a while.
i originally purchased a large, quiet shredder from staples but it burned out the motor (with a big cloud of smoke) in the first week so i returned it for a refund and purchased this smaller shredder
however, if you respect the motor and understand physical and electrical limits, it will be fine for home use.
bought this just yesterday 11/13/07 and not that impressed with motor power.stuck in unopened junk mail (probably 6 sheets) and it really bogged it down.did cut it up but not that happy about it.
as soon as i listen to the motor i was impressed.
if you want something for a home office and expect to have more substantial needs, get a bigger unit with a more powerful motor - and one that fits 8.5 x 11 paper.
*handle on the top motor housing for easy lifting
not for stacks of paper-- the motor will get very warm.
if you do use it continuously, it will stop when the motor overheats.
motor seems strong and has no problem handling a reasonable amount of sheets of paper at one time.
the motor is so quiet that the main thing you hear while it is doing its job, is the actual sound of the blades pulverizing whatever you are feeding into it.
it has a much bigger motor and feels very heavy duty.
pros motor is strong, is pretty quite, and does a good job on the shredding.
the unit has plenty of capacity and has a excellent motor (doesn't seem to slow down when shredding ten documents at time).
i believe that if the motor had just a little bit stronger it would be a great cd/dvd shredder too!
and receipts (unlike some fellowes models); it will chug through multi-sheets, but i don't recommend pushing it to capacity (ten sheets) as one can really hear the motor start to labor and slow down.
the motor constantly stays on instead of in an 'auto' mode.
