I couldn't even get one stitch out of it. The bobbin would not move once "dropped in". Thought that the Singer name ment something, but I was wrong! from Sears.com My last Singer was 30+ years old. and used it for basic stitching. from Sears.com Well I just took back my Singer 4220 after it got so bad that it would lock up after 8 inches of sewing a straight stitch. I returned my 4220 to Sears and found that this 4228 model was $30 cheaper on sale. from Sears.com I ordered this machine because it was cute, and because I thought Singer was a good brand. However, it was manufactured poorly, and the needle didn't line up with the hole, so it hit the plate. from Sears.com The direction of the hand wheel has nothing to do with direction of stitch. Get comfortable using the hand wheel and you will have much greater success with ANY sewing machine. Obviously, I am NOT an accomplished seamstress and yet, I was able to have complete success with this little Singer sewing machine. Perhaps, it is because I am so unsure of myself and my ability, that I am willing to pull out the instruction book every time I thread and insert bobbins and DO THE DROP (bounce) TEST and the PULL TEST every single time! from Amazon.com Like other reviewers it took me a few uses, as a beginner, to realize what a piece of junk this machine is. This is NOT your mother's Singer. It jams for no apparent reason, snaps the thread every 3 inches, is a pain to get the bobbin in, & I could go on forever, but I'm in a hurry to run out & get a Brother. from Amazon.com I had hoped for a simple yet reliable sewing machine to handle the sewing chores necessary for making my new home livable. And after some fooling about with adjustments the Singer 8280 hits the spot. It was easy to start up again knowing I hadn't made a huge investment in the machine. I trust Singer and this model has lots of bells and whistles for the price. I myself have had nothing but problems. I followed instructions and used only singer needles/bobbins. I have spent more time replacing needles, re-threading and fixing tangled-up bobbins than I have spent actually sewing. from Amazon.com I got this machine because of its Name. I know my mother and my aunt had this for years. Singer has made a compromise on its quality parts these days from Amazon.com
