First, I am programmer that works from home, with some expertise in setting up a usable home network. This little box allows me to remote in when i am on the road, replace a few NAS drives, simplify backup, AND share music and photos.

For PCs, it has worked flawlessly as an image backup server. For media, it's fantastic to have my movies, music and photos centralized in a reasonably safe place. Additionally, the server is VERY expandable (storage size), which is a distinct advantage over the second gen which does not support eSATA port multiplication (recognizing multiple drives on one port). It also will automatically check your iTunes collection, and add new songs, if you can't be bothered to organize your music manually to the server.

My HP EX475 MediaSmart Server developed a loud noise after only 15 months. I was suprised to discover that HP DOES NOT OFFER POST WARRANTY SERVICE SUPPORT & DOES NOT PROVIDE PARTS FOR REPAIR.

First I have to say the Mediasmart Server did not work with my system out of the box. I have two desktop computers, a laptop, a xbox 360 and a Zune all connected to it.

Ordering from Amazon was a breeze. The setup of the HP EX475 was easy, I install a 1 TB for extra storage was easy too. But be very careful what software you have, installation needs Win XP and later, no first installation for 64-bit system; that comes after you install the software in a 32-bit system from the CD.

I have decided to inport this personally and I strongly feel now it was a right decision. It's very easy to use and reliable. I am so satisfied with HP EX475. Fantastic product for sure.

Was going to upgrade & re-use an older PC and just get the the Windows Home Server software. Glad I deceided to get this HP MediaSmart Server instead. It works exactly like it is adverised.

That is the reason for this product. This was designed to do two things, backup your computers and share media and files and it does it well.
The HP Mediasmart Server handles backups of all computers on your home and allows the ability to share all media. You install a small piece of software on each computer and each night, all of the computers are backup.

I recently purchased an EX470 and my initial glee upon its arrival has been somewhat dampened by the fact that you cannot setup the server if you are running 64-bit Windows client PCs.
The software discs supplied by HP with the EX470 will *only* run on 32-bit Windows, and both of our PCs are running 64-bit Vista.
