I purchased this smoke alarm because it's the only flush mount one that i could find. The gas utility companies are considerate enough to add odors to so you have a pretty good idea when something is amiss but in the case of wiring, you have no clue until it's too late. However, once the correct circuit breaker was identified swapping out this alarm with the old unit was reasonably simple as the electrical box matched one of the boxes in the instructions. In the case of pre-existing circuitry, if you can replace a ceiling fan, bathroom lighting fixture or chandelier, this installation isn't any more difficult. from Amazon.com Hence, older homes should stick with full battery models. I am impressed at the battery backup on this unit since power outages do happen here and those are the times when fires are more susceptible. There isn't much to say here as I haven't had any alarms go off (fortunately) but Kidde is well known to be a quality smoke detector product so the confidence is there. I'm pretty sure I could never install it myself, but having a smoke detector like this is so important to me (we have six kids) I'd pay someone to install it if I had to.
