works fine for even 1/2 cup of dry rice (using the cup that came with it, which is smaller than a regular cup).
one difference is learning how to clean the zo, which, compared to washing out a pan is a little more tricky, but after 2-3 uses, i felt like i had the process down and didn't have to think about it

since they do not after holding for 20+ minutes in 3 different ocations i can only say - do not buy this if you want something that will work!
the brown rice setting is awesome -- a slow cook over 1.2 hours -- and it's so nice and fluffy and delicious.
in terms of functionality and form, it is light years ahead of the aroma rice cooker which i purchased at target a few years ago for about $25.
