Wize Buying Guide for Vegetables
Besides performing their eponymous function, rice cookers can also steam fresh vegetables at the same time - a real convenience for any home chef. Here are some tips for finding the best rice cooker/steamer combination for your home and family.
Capacity
If you're living alone there's no need to get a unit with 10 cups capacity, but if you're feeding a family of four it's going to be essential. As you are planning to cook vegetables as well as rice, you may want to get a larger unit than you would for rice alone. Check the capacity of the unit and make sure it fits your needs.
Warming Function
A convenient extra that lets you keep your steamed vegetables and rice warm after they have been prepared. When your rice & vegetables cook faster than the rest of your meal, the warming function allows you to avoid overcooking.
NonStick
There's nothing worse than scraping burned rice off the bottom of a pan. Nonstick units are easier to clean, and actually prevent the rice and vegetables from burning, within reason. If you can afford it, a nonstick rice cooker or steamer is worth the investment.
