hard water scaling on the heating element can be removed / controlled by boiling the water with a teaspoon of lemon juice, and cleaning with cloth (to me, it is a maintenance routine once in a while).

there are warning labels next to the heating element, perhaps you should remove those if you have a problem with "burning paper".

i think the people that have reported bad smells just didn't remove the "shipping paper" that is between the "inner pot" and the "heating element".

as for cleaning the water reservoir, i empty the steamer after each day's use - to reduce deposits on the heating element from the water being re-used and getting salts concentrated in it.
