This is really a Muti-Cooker. from Amazon.com I use the Presto cooker primarily for deep frying potatoes, breaded chicken and pork chops only which does an excellent job and use a seperate similar cooker (Rival) for slow cooking only (which also can be used for deep frying with the crock removed). The Presto is deep enough that it does not splatter oil on the counter even though I use a fine wire mesh screen that covers it. from Amazon.com Not sure if the kettle on this is bigger than Presto's other gem the Kitchen Kettle, but if it's the same as that, then this is a great addition to have for the kitchen. Great for soups, stews, steaming, deep fry cooking, lots of other cooking applications. from Amazon.com I bought this EXACT model in 2001, and along with steaming, blanching, roasting, etc., it clearly advertises itself as a "deep fryer" of which it does an excellent job. The manual even includes full frying instructions!

If Presto has decided to now say "don't fry in this", it is strictly a legal move. The problem is that Presto's "fry daddy" line has no temperature control, and it's preset low enough so that you can't set any frying liquid on fire.

from Amazon.com The enclosed manual states in bold type to NOT fry in the multi-cooker. Obviously you could fry in it (the regulated temp goes to 400 degrees) but I noticed that ALL Presto fryers no longer have baskets. I suspect that a lawsuit resulting from a full basket tipping over a fryer led to Presto adding the disclaimer and their removal of baskets from ALL fryer products. from Amazon.com The guys went nuts, especially, my brother Jarrick, he loved that there was little mess and because of the drop basket and tempature gauge, not mistakes.
