The mess, however, is not worth the trouble. The only reason we still use it is because we have an extra small apartment stove & cannot cook rice while we're cooking anything else on the stove. So, we fall back on this Rival rice cooker. We have to lay towels around the cooker & cover anything close by to prevent a major clean-up. from Target.com I bought this to use in our vacation trailer because it was compact and looked easy to clean. I tried it out at home and after one sticky, goopy, burned-on-the-bottom mess; and then reading the reviews on this site, this waste of money is going right back to the store. from Target.com Normally, I would go through those little Aroma brand, aluminum pot rice cookers once a year. The problem with Aroma brands was that a small pinhole would be develop in the aluminum pot, causing it to leak. This Rival, coated pot has never given me any problems. I don't even "rinse" or clean my rice before I cook it. from Target.com My husband and I use our little Rival at least once a week, and we have yet to be disappointed. The rice is always perfect....not too dry, and not under or over-cooked. from Target.com But who wants a rice cooker that you need to baby sit? In general, if I return a product, I only give it 1 star. I am giving the Rival Rice Cooker 2 stars because, despite the mess, the rice did seem to turn out fine. However, it is perfect for two or three people. Rival did a disservice to its customers by writing the instruction book in such a way that it makes you think you MUST use its squirrelly measuring cup and internal markings for the nonstick basket. Rival should be proud from Amazon.com i've used it to cook both white and brown rice, goya boxed rice mixes, rice-a-roni (brown first), and even steel-cut oats. from Target.com
