it has alot of replay value, since you need to accomplish a few things before getting the best ending.
most nes games (contra, another konami game, comes to mind here) stretched replay value by making games so hard that you'd routinely throw a controller out the window.
as far as value, replayability, and quality, it's going to be a tough one to beat.
for many, though, the gameplay, soundtrack, and replay value were worth it.
for me, this completely enhances replayability.
