Projection Screens for Home Use Buying Guide

If you've recently purchased a projector for your home theater, a projector screen is the next step. The right screen can bring out the color and details of your favorite movies and create a theater-like experience in your own home. Here are some important product details to take into consideration before purchasing.

Aspect Ratio

Different screens will have different aspect ratios. If you'll be using your projector screen to watch DVDs and HDTV, you'll want to opt for a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the standard for HD content.

Screen Grain

Screen Grain will directly effect the vividness of colors and clarity of the image. The higher the screen grain, the sharper and richer the image; however, as you go higher with screen grain you'll loose the viewing angle, so take into consideration how wide your viewing angle needs will be before opting for the highest grain screen.

Screen Type

Portable, manual, electronic... what works best for you? Portable screens can be moved and put away, but they aren't as stable as permanent screens. If you are setting up a permanent home theater, you'll want a screen mounted to the floor, ceiling, or wall. Fixed screens are available, but screens that roll into a casing are less obtrusive and generally more popular. Manual screens (requiring pulling or cranking to open) are often less expensive than the electronic versions that open via remote control or other automated means, but are subject to more wear-and-tear due to handling. Get what works best for you and your budget.
