The only positive thing about the ink is that it is separated out into separate color cartridges that you replace instead of having to replace an entire cartridge when one color runs out. A nice bonus if you do a lot of printing.
I have an old Canon that would've cost more to replace the printhead than to buy a new printer so I chose the latter. I wish I would've spent the money on a new printhead.

I only owned this printer for a couple of days before returning it. While the printer is OK for low volume printing, it will kill you on ink cost if you print a lot. Compared to the older ip4500 model, the ip4600 is a lot SLOWER and uses ink cartridges that are a lot smaller and more expensive.
The 221 cartridge contains only about 8 ml of usable ink, compared to about 12 ml usable ink in the older CLI-8 cartridge.

Pros: Inexpensive, bought on sale elsewhere. Easier to maintain than Epson photo printers. Cons: Photo image quality not as good as Epson.

Changing the cartridges for no reason that I can see. I had a fairly extensive selection of spare inks which are now of no use as the new cartridges are physically smaller. I will think long and hard whether or not to buy canon again.

The Canon IP 4600 printer arrived promptly in excellent condition. I had to assemble a bunch of parts including the ink jets and 5 ink cartridges.

I replaced a Canon PIXMA ip3000 with this printer. It works almost exactly the same as the old printer with one exception.

I purchased this printer to replace a Canon PIXMA IP5000 which had some print head issues after 5 years. It was inexpensive compared to a new IP5000.

My old Canon Pixma iP4200 worked pretty well for three years (noisy, but I got used to that), but during the last 6 months, the print heads printed horizontal lines on photos and images, no matter how many times I ran the maintenance routines.
So I upgraded to the Pixma iP4600.

Pros: Please see comments below. Cons: Please see comments below. Other Thoughts: The Canon Pixma iP4200 worked pretty well for three years (quite noisy, but I got used to that), but in the final 6 months, no matter how many times I ran the maintenance routines, photos and images printed with horizontal lines (print heads). So I upgraded to the Pixma iP4600.

I bought this from Amazon a few months ago and I must say that the photo quality is perfect. My pictures print out better then if I take them to a store to be printed.
