Pros: Brother made good on it. They cross shipped a replacement (small refundable deposit on credit card required) and it came with a call tag to return the dead one so I didn't get stuck for shipping. from Newegg.com I haven't tried it yet with Windows but have no reason to doubt it will work. I wanted a Multi-function that had decent Linux support. I already have a MFC-7820N working with Linux so I knew Brother was good in that department. If you look at the installation instructions on Brother's site they seem somewhat intimidating. from Amazon.com Evidently if you have the new OS you need to NOT use the startup disc as Snow Leopard does it all for you. (and therefore you get trouble if the drivers are installed both ways.) In my case I was getting "Error:invalid format for short nick name" when I tried to print anything. But the very helpful guy at Brother solved the problem fast. from Amazon.com Another quirk that took me some time to figure out on the printer itself is that tray #1 has all the paper settings (photo quality, transparencies etc) but tray #2 only does plain paper printing so when I had the ledger size paper in tray 2 and tried to do photo quality it wouldn't let me. It turns out I just had to switch the paper because for my purposes everyday printing is usually letter size so I put that in tray 2 and the ledger 11X17 size in tray one. Also for ledger printing you may have to go in and change your maximum scan size manually (Go to Start > All Programs > Brother > XXX-XXXX (Where XXXXXXX is your model name) > Scanner Settings >Scanner Utility. Then make sure that A3/Ledger is selected for "Maximum Scanning Size". from Amazon.com I didn't pay attention to how big this baby is and was unaware I was getting a full 11X17 all in one. Luckily it just barely fit the computer hutch it went in but it must be twice the size of the Brother it replaced. Getting it set up was really a biotch on the ethernet and I did have to figure out giving it a static IP address which is no big deal if you are able to do that sort of thing. from Amazon.com It's only redeaming feature is it's wifi. This is another product that was put into production without having adequate development. Then I came across the Brother MFC-6490CW. Under $300? from Amazon.com I still have some documents that I printed with the HP just before disconnecting it. One was of the fireboat house on the Embarcadero here in San Francisco, clearly showing the SFFD on the front of the building. I tried printing this same document using the Brother and the image was extremely dark, the contrast was poor and I could never read the SFFD regardless of how I tweaked the settings.
