I needed a decent fax machine so I got MFC-685cw on sale. I consider myself to be very tech savvy and this one seem to have a lot of awesome features like WiFi connectivity, remote scanning, document feeder, color faxing, decent print resolution. from Amazon.com Copy function OK. Comes with Paperport 11SE. Informed by Brother customer service that the Byzantine manual scan procedure is normal, including an error message. Scans OK from computer, but buttons on scanner are useless, simply leading you back to the computer initiated scan procedure. from Amazon.com Even trying the 'overseas mode'. My older HP fax did not have this problem, even without using the pre-dialing codes for enhanced faxing and call wait disable. I have tickets in with the VoiP service and also Brother. Brother has yet to get back to me, my second service ticket is now in their system with no response. from Newegg.com Kept taking the paper out and putting it back in and after 8 times it started working and has not stopped since. Started to RMA but after the paper feed started working decided not to. Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a Canon MFC MP530 which is a lot bigger and heaver. Mainly because the Ink for the Canon was costing me $80 and I did not have room on my desk. from Newegg.com I like everything about this printer EXCEPT that when you run out of colored ink, you cannot print---even if you have a full black ink cartridge. It's Brother's way of forcing people to buy more of their ink cartridges (although the Brother representative who spoke to me about the problem gave me some bull about how the machine would be damaged if it printed from only the black ink cartridge). Anyway, I solve the problem by putting some electrical tape over the middle part of each cartridge that is registering as out of ink. from Amazon.com I bought this printer to consolidate multiple fax/printers and for the wireless networking. Overall it works mostly as advertised and has a compact footprint but a few critical flaws mar it and I will most likely never buy another Brother printer again. The first is that there is no "sleep mode" - the printer is basically on all the time so if you want to use it as a phone and answering machine everything has to be on including the color LCD 24 hours a day. from Amazon.com I have had no trouble, and the real selling point is it's compact size! The ink changes easily from the front, and it comes with a very detailed instruction book. Cons: The first one had trouble printing black ink on the paper. I tried 2 brand new Brother cartridges ... nothing. from Newegg.com Print quality is very good. Print speed is adequate for my use. It is slightly noisier than the HP all in one machine I had prior to this one...but the Brother appears to be sturdier.
