The Brother 4040 prints faster than my previous Konica/Minlolta. However (and it's a big "however") -- as another review stated -- the colors are very inaccurate and not very saturated either, even when I ramp up the "saturation" controls.

I bought this at Staples but since I rely so heavily on Amazon reviews I thought I'd submit here. I've had this machine 2 months, and it replaced an old HP LaserJet 5 black and white printer. I use it in a small office, and I'm the only user so I don't require that much of it.

Pros: During 6 months of light (10-20 pages) personal home document printing, this printer:is quieter than my tower fans and hard drives, even while printing. Totally silent when sleeping, has never jammed,consistently delivers excellent color document print quality,shipped fast and set up right out of the box, is not, and was not advertised or purchased as a picture printer,is plenty fast starting and printing multiple copies, using USB interface,has print software that is easy to use, adequately flexible and configurable without unnecessary complication. Makes us perfectly happy with Brother and we were already delighted with newegg.com following about 10-12 years of business with them! We purchased it at a good price for a color laser printer.

I was in the process of shopping for new toner cartridges and a drum for my old laser when I ran across an ad for the Brother HL-4040cdn color laser. After realizing that it was actually cheaper to buy a new laser than to buy supplies for my old one, I made the purchase.

Pros: nice quality prints, speed is satisfactory and price was good for a laser printer Cons: I had an original magenta cartridge that was used very little that came with the new printer, (used approx 50 pages)with a manufacturers defect that Brother would not stand behind because it was out of warranty. I had to spend $75 to replace it.

Toner still shows full after months of use. Cons: First one came with a serious defect that prevented paper feeding. Brother set me up with an (unfortunately) refurbished model, free of charge. Color isn't amazing, but is acceptable if you aren't printing photos.

I bought one myself to replace my old but reliable HP LaserJet 4M+. I intend to use this as a black printer and some occasional documents with spot-color.

Just got this a month ago and no problems. I didn't expect it to have as good a resolution as an inkjet, but then that's not why I went with a laser printer, I wanted to save money in the long run. This is a very solid printer, I was originally shopping for a B/W printer but found that color was within my price range.

I really felt I should have purchased it locally in view of his attitude, but in the past I have been more than happy with my dealings with Amazon. The only other problem was, I installed the printer, the test page was fine, but the first color job came out black & white. I had to go to the Brother web site to down load a later Vista driver (Circa 2007) that did the trick. Surely a printer should have updated drivers (Over a year old drivers)when it is shipped.

Got this printer due to my 2 other very positive Brother Laser printers, HL5240 & MFC7840W, both excellent, fast and very reliable, the second reason is my old favorite, Konica Minolta 2300DL (Color Laser) is dying and hoping to combine the function with my still working Brother HL5240 to save space.
Involved with design and illustrations, I print 80% of my work & documents in full color or combination text & color images, in short, I'm very color sensitive.
