the box says it has built in loudness compensation for low volume listening--but it is not adjustable nor can it be turned off.
one disadvantage is that the am antenna is not rotatable separate of the radio--so if you are listening to a weak signal, you may have to turn the radio to an undesirable direction for best reception.
