Wize Buying Guide for Beginners Buying your first desktop computer isn't as difficult as you might think. The best thing about desktops is that you don’t have purchase all the components from one manufacturer. You can shop for deals from different printer, monitor and CPU manufacturers at your favorite places online or in store, and find great deals. Put them all together and you have a tailor-made technology center. However, you can also find great deals when you buy all the components in a packaged deal, so check out prices both ways before you buy.

By far the most important consideration for first-time buyers is computer memory. For beginners or light PC users this is probably more important than CPU power or speed. If you don’t have enough memory the PC can crash in the middle of your work, and you don't want that to happen. For today’s PC configurations, 2GB of RAM is recommended for machines that use Microsoft Vista and hook up to the internet. Mac users can generally get by with 1GB of memory. You can get great deals in flat panel monitors too, so there's no need to settle for the old-fashioned CRT monitors that take up all of your desk space.

Newer PCs incorporate both the monitor and the CPU in a single package, which look great and can make a real fashion statement.
