i have found it noticeable--but not really problematic--only during periods of near silence in movie or music soundtracks.
my previous home theater used a 56" crt rear projection hdtv, and i cannot see any ineriority in black levels using the hd7100 projector.
strengths: fantastic picture, easy to use, makes dvds look like hd discs weaknesses: costly unit, replacement lamps are $999!
the source was a sony bluray dvd player and a br pressing of spiderman 2.
most projectors of this kind are designed for data projection, but this one can be used for movies.
all of the dvds you own are 480 lines so if you just plan on watching your current movie collection this projector will excel at the task as it can handle more than your dvds can crank out.
i've only watched four movies on it so far, so i can't speak to the reliabilty issue.
i use it for video gaming, watching dvds and tv in my office.
started watching a movie on it, got about 15 minutes into it and everything shut down.
the cool thing is that they include a rgb to 15 pin connector so u can connect it to your dvd player for a really clear image.
i use it at home for movies (projectors are great as a flat screen alternative) but you have to be able to arange your furniture (couch sideways) if you don't set it up permanently in your house
for the price of a 32" flat screen we are now watching movies that are 10 feet wide!
also paired it with a close-out first gen toshiba hd xa1 hd-dvd player (got the projector for $875 (the projector place) and the player for $385 (ebay) -- both delivered for only $1,260).
it really shines watching hdtv movies (in cinema mode) in a darkened room or sporting events in a partially lit room.
dvds (from my stand-alone player) look great on this projector (sw episode 3 looks awesome!) and hdtv (through my computer's hdtv tuner card) looks absolutely incredible.
"the hd1000u should logically appeal to those seeking a brighter projector to watch movies with modest ambient light, or on really large screens, or who like sports and hdtv in brighter rooms."
summary: the best movie projector around 1000$ good video quality vivid color clear image 720p can support hdtv in current cases low noise and remoter is easy to control manual is easy to read
dlp projector or any other brand noise interfere with experience of a great movie.
even regular dvds look as good as what i see in the theaters - i'm looking forward to getting blu-ray soon.
hdtv looks fantastic: images are crisp and black levels are better than i expected.
i have a movie theatre size screen on my wall.
i need to try a hd-dvd or blue-ray dvd player, but will wait for those prices to come down and/or consolidate.while i knew i would have ambient light issues before i purchased it, i didn't realize

the video processing of the non-hd inputs is impressive, i had my old dvd player hooked up to it when i first got it and they looked fantastic on the screen, no pixelation at all.
hdtv is superb, hd dvd is impossibly fantastic, and even sd looks great.
i always wanted the "big screen" and wanted to be able to watch hdtv and hd ddvd as well as gaming.
