i have an upconvert dvd and direct tv hooked up to it with an hdmi cable and it looks beautiful.
when the install guys finished the work they stuck around for like an hour later popping in one blu-ray title after another because the picture was just so amazing for being so big.

if it isn't mounted, it could act as a semi-portable tv in your home - we hook it up to our macbook pro's at night to watch dvd's and streaming tv from our slingbox.
it's not necessary to have a costly upconversion dvd player as this projector does a better job at it.
i have it connected to an xobx 360, hd through cable and an upconverting dvd player.
dvd and hd directv are amazing, it's not great at standard def channels, but still looks ok.
