If you're going to use your mp3 player primarily for working out, you won’t need many of the bells and whistles that come with expensive, top-of-the-line brands.

Large hard drives are not important unless you plan to use your mp3 player for more than an hour or two at a time. Marathon runners may want to invest in a device with more storage, but a fancy LCD display probably won't be necessary, unless you want to watch movies while you're jogging on the treadmill.

What is important is size and durability. Light-weight units that can resist a hard crash on the floor are a must. You may even want to look at a sports-specific model, such as the Oregon Scientific. These units are durable and waterproof and keep track of your pulse, your speed, calories burnt and much more.

These units may cost a little more than a standard music player, but for the serious sports enthusiast, it’s definitely worth a look.
