Pros: I have built 3 servers based on these boards and 2.93Ghz Quad CPUs. Easy to work with, lots of PCI and is pretty fast with 7x velociraptors in RAID10 with Areca PCI-E controller. from Newegg.com That was important as this machine interfaces with some other equipment. Oddly positioned at first glance, the first PCI slot lined up perfectly with my 2U case's riser card. 6 SATA ports means I may not have have to buy a RAID card. Works great with Fedora 9 and 10 (with caveats as noted below) Cons: Had a heck of a time with Linux installation. from Newegg.com Pros: ..for an inexpensive server board. Love the BIOS watchdog, overheat and chassis LEDs, numerous dip switches rather than in the BIOS. Very quiet. So far very stable in Ubuntu. from Newegg.com Cons: came with the latest bio's, so it wouldn't let me O. C.. because of and didn't need a server yet, i sent it back Other Thoughts: bought it as combo (G skill ram 2X2gigs 800 Mhz) and worked fine with the Q6600 i got with it. xp pro 64Bit installed perfect, but windows server '08 said it wasn't 64Bit during component check of install. from Newegg.com Pros: Pretty good motherboard, it does not come with a back up power input (so when you go to install the back up power line from your power box and can't find the connection, don't be surprised) The sata connectors are clear of any big 3d card you have to insert. Cons: I wish it came with 3 more jacks for surround sound speakers. from Newegg.com Pros: Great quality, loads of PCI ports, loads of USB, loads of SATA, onboard video Cons: I may just be missing it, but no ability to set RAM frequency? Other Thoughts: (1) Built this as a lab system, primarily for Server 2003 and 2008. Matched with an Intel Q6600 cpu and 4GB Kingston DDR2-800 (KVR800D2N5K2/4G). (2) While designed as a workstation board, don't overlook its potential as a modest, affordable entry-level server with lots of features, without lots of proprietary clutter. from Newegg.com Installed Fedora 9 without a hitch. I didn't really appreciate before buying that anything you want on the mobo is there- 12 USB ports, 4 serial ports, legacy par-port, serviceable integrated video. Cons: No Solaris 64-bit compatibility, but according to the Supermicro site, can run the 32-bit version of Solaris. Oddly enough, the Supermicro C2SBM, the mATX sister to this board, has 64-bit Solaris compatibility, but not 32-bit compatibility, even though the specs are almost exactly the same. from Newegg.com Pros: Fully compatible with Windows Server 2008 Std. 64-bit even though drivers are not available from Supermicro. All motherboard components including RAID, video, and sound drivers are built into the Server 2008 install so you have to do nothing. from Newegg.com lets hope it lasts longer than the $85 board from an unnamed vendor.not intended for overclocking gamers. from Newegg.com
