Pros: I have several of these motherboards, coupled with the supermicro SC-836 3U rackmount 16-bay chassis for storage servers, and I have yet to have an issue (knock on wood). I was impressed by the documentation and the driver CD (especially the makedisk program for drivers). from Newegg.com I don't know if it's a problem with the connector on the board itself, or if the case's headers are just not shielded properly. If you don't plug in any speakers, Vista will say you have 'no sound device' and won't play any audio, causing errors in old apps, which seems kind of pointless. The Supermicro "super doctor" software doesn't seem to work that well on Vista, but who cares. Overall, these are just minor annoyances that don't really affect anything day-to-day. from Newegg.com Installed Fedora 9 without a hitch. I didn't really appreciate before buying that anything you want on the mobo is there- 12 USB ports, 4 serial ports, legacy par-port, serviceable integrated video. Cons: No Solaris 64-bit compatibility, but according to the Supermicro site, can run the 32-bit version of Solaris. Oddly enough, the Supermicro C2SBM, the mATX sister to this board, has 64-bit Solaris compatibility, but not 32-bit compatibility, even though the specs are almost exactly the same. from Newegg.com Pros: -Only mATX (barely; board is 10x10, mATX spec is 9.6x9.6... may not fit in all mATX cases) dual cpu board on the market that I know of, and the only one I've ever seen -6 SATA headers -Uses ECC/REG DDR2 instead of FBDIMMs -All 6 fan headers support PWM fans -Supermicro reliability & quality Cons: -Board seems very slow to POST with a video card installed; takes 15-30 seconds for the VGA BIOS screen to display on both an 8800GT and a HD2600XT -Northbridge heatsink appears to be glued down, not just clipped; it does not loosen up even when the heatsink is pushing 120*F -2 of the 4 internal USB ports are actual, physical, USB type A ports, which wreaks havoc with front panel connectors; I made custom adapter cables -Technically violates mATX spec but is still marked here and on Supermicro's site as mATX Other Thoughts: Overall a very good board that I'm very happy with. It has given me no reliability or stability issues, it is basically well laid out, it's not very expensive as far as dual cpu boards go, and it's allowed me to cram a dual CPU box into a micro atx desktop case. from Newegg.com Pros: Fully compatible with Windows Server 2008 Std. 64-bit even though drivers are not available from Supermicro. All motherboard components including RAID, video, and sound drivers are built into the Server 2008 install so you have to do nothing. from Newegg.com Cons: The board just beeps continuously and displays no video. The bios apparently cannot recognize any memory. I even went to SuperMicro's site to get the memory that was tested for this board. That did not even work. from Newegg.com 3. About the single rank DIMMs. If you read the new manual on Supermicro's site it says that rev 1.0 of this board can only take single rank DIMMS. Rev 1.1 can take dual rank DIMMs in slots 1 and 2. from Newegg.com Pros: Solid, reliable, and durable. As usual Supermicro makes some of the most well-designed board available to the general public. The board is being used in a SAN controller role with 8 gig of ram and dual Xeon E5655 processors. from Newegg.com i build systems for a living and i put this board together today. Large with no trouble whatsoever. kind of a tight squeeze even inside one of the largest supermicro pedestal cases. Cons: no cons as of yet Other Thoughts: connect everything to the board before installing into the cases. from Newegg.com Very stable. Cons: Hard to find a case for this motherboard.
