We got the plastic plunger, not the wooden one, and though it does get food in the grooves as mentioned, it isn't too hard to use, and rinses right off. Overall, we are very pleased, and can't believe how much faster it is to make applesauce with this. As noted, this will not work if you do not have a kitchenaid mixer.
