Yes, I would like to make bread. I spoke with KA customer service this morning to inquire if this model is now being manufactured with the metal gear box, or if it's the same old "we're going to save a $1 per unit by using this plastic gear box". I received a verbal, pre-constructed, corporate answer about how it doesn't matter if the gearbox is plastic or metal because KA stands behind this product, bla bla bla. I told her it mattered to me and I couldn't feel good about doing business with KA without knowing what I'm getting.
I love this machine. It performs beautifully and it's much faster to make cakes with this mixer. Saving time in the preparation of baked goods is important at our B & B.
Good news: it is a great mixer while it lasts, and the customer service is fantastic. Bad news: I'm waiting for my third replacement in 18 months.
I got my mixer not quite a year ago and I absolutely love it! I have wanted a Kitchenaid forever and got a great deal on this at Williams-Sonoma.
Joel: I can't believe you had the same problem as us! My husband did the same thing, took it apart only to find cracked plastic and shook his head.
For years I used the old Hobart kitchenaid mixer with great satisfaction. I used it so long that the carbons had to be replaced.
I received this item in only the packing you would see on the store shelf. It has black grease all over it.
I believe Kitchen Aid has some quality issues to work out. I used my Kitchen aid almost daily-- I did not misuse it.
I'm glad I listened to Cooks Illustrated review and went for the Pro 600 rather than the Artisan model. It stands up to 10 minutes of dough kneading without a struggle.
If you knead atta regularly for rotis, this is the best thing in your kitchen. Makes excellent dough for rotis, puris and cakes.
