Desirability: If i were you (person reading this review)I would kill to have this mic for vocal recording. Sound: I love this mic. I own a couple of mics like an audio technica at 3035, mxl 990, nuemann tlm 103, and the mxl 2003. Out of all of the mics i own not one can compare to this one exept for my nuemann, but other than that the best mic i own! from Zzounds.com Thats all I ask. Value: Highly competitive price point. Desirability: You have to accept the fact that this is not considered a high end brand, but if neumann put this capsule/electronics in on eof their mics, it would sell and the reviews would be favorable. from Zzounds.com Feature: Great sound, bass rolloff, 10 db pad, omni capsule - all for $100 - you cannot beat that. It came with a mic clip, not a shockmount, and that will cost you $35 elsewhere so beware of that. The MXL 41-603 shockmount fits the 604 nicely and is very high quality - better than any other shockmounts I have. MXL has a great line of condenser and tube microphones. from Zzounds.com The most of the condensermics are shining with Sing Vocals but when you start to Rap in those mics they they get very much distortion. Because the Capsule inside cant handle the pressure with rap vocals. But the MXL770 got a little 20mm capsule diagram, and when you open up the mic you can see that there is a 2nd eeny meeny popkiller in front of the capsule itselff, verry special in my opinion never see it before by other mics I used. So it's verry dificullt to distort this capsule, is very good protected and it's just 20mm in size. from Zzounds.com Well, I caught the bug again lately and felt guilty about ridding myself of all my equipment. But I wanted ease and convenience and I started researching the USB mics out there. I listened to about ever sample available, and I was fairly sure the MXL mic were worth investigating further. They have a rich, full-bodied sound which I like. from Amazon.com The killer for this mic was when I purchased a used dynamic mic from a competitor -- the Shure SM57, the mic that has been around for 30 years and every studio has. That mic costs twice as much, and isn't a condenser, but beat this mic handily on the mids, and the base is even cleaner close-up to it. The MXL 990 just gets muddier up close, and even with a good pop-filter, it still popped. I wouldn't have bothered getting the SM57 as a vocal mic, but it has received good reviews, and I got it for half-price since it was used. from Amazon.com The MXL 990 is one of many Chinese-manufactured condenser mics that suffer from two common problems - it is simultaneously ill-defined in the critical midrange and excessively harsh in the treble range. While the circuit used in the mic is quite clever and fairly well implemented, the sonic deficiencies lie within the condenser capsule and headbasket acoustics. from Amazon.com I purchased the MXL 990 after being taken for what I believe are counterfeit Shure SM78's on eBay. The upgrade to a large diaphragm microphone was noticeable right away - just the weight and size made me feel like my studio had been upgraded. from Amazon.com It worked right out of the box with my Mac, so no problems in the compatibility department. I was poking around to make myself feel better about buying this microphone over the popular Samson C01U and Snowball, and came across a review of all of these microphones, including the new Rode Podcaster, pitted against each other. The reviewer noted a distinct B-natural pitch from the MXLUSB.006, though it did have less self-noise than the Samson.
