i installed this on windows xp and simply plugging the base (i'm running on a desktop computer) and turning on the mouse resulted in it being immediately recognized and available for use.

it's windows xp and vista compatible, so if you have an older version computer you'll either need to upgrade or get an older version cordless mouse.

when installing the software (thanks logitech for including an actual cd!), the installer asked for the "windows xp installation disk." it was looking for the file "mouhid.sys".
