This type of  humidifier turns off and on by itself, regulating the humidity in the room according to the level that you choose.  The size of your bedroom should also be taken into account before purchase; if you buy a humidifier that is too large, bacteria can settle in the water tank. If it too small, however, you will need to refill it constantly. For most bedroom sizes, one with a 2-4 gallon tank should be sufficient.
