most aquarium pumps i know are loud, not soft/quiet nor do they hum; and because the pump is screw-mounted to the bottom of the unit (which is plastic), i'm left thinking the entire unit must vibrate
pros: strong (but noisy) fan.
downside: noisy, somewhat flimsy construction on side panels.
even living somewhere where it is very low humidity (usually less than 10%) it does not cool enough to make it worth the noise.
it is difficult to clean up and very noisy.
the only complaint i have is that the highest fan setting is almost unusable - it is very noisy.
it does not have enough capacity to humidify your entire house, unless you live in a very small ranch.

this is not a "quiet" humidifier, it sounds like a small fan which was perfect for us since we usually sleep w/fans for noise anyway.
i would not describe this humidifier as "whisper quiet," but it's not really noisy either.
it is a simple, easy to use humidifier and i would recommend it to anyone who has a problem with dry air.
it adds enough white noise to my daughters room that she doesn't hear every little noise going on in the house, it does not disturb her sleep at all!

It's pretty loud and if you're a light sleeper, don't even bother looking at this humidifier, you will not sleep.

i have big hands and am very strong and i had blisters on my fingers trying to tighten the cover so it wouldn't leak.

2/02/06 This humidifier didn't work correctly from the start.
My prior experience is with fan-based units (too loud) and a Honeywell warm mist unit with digital humidistat(works great, not made anymore).
I've been using this humidifier for years, first as the Slant/Fin.
This is a realy nice humidifier for a very good price.

I have a lot of Holmes products, so when I was looking for a new humidifier, I purchased this one.
We run on low and it is about as loud as an ariliner's cabin at cruising altitude.
This unit is definitely not fancy, consists of a the fan/motor unit, 2 wicks, and around 3-4 gallon tank for the water.
This little guy is the coolest!

I was surprised when I recieved it because it is SOO small.
It's the perfect humidifier to travel with or to keep on your desk while you're working.
I don't find them 'spitting' moisture/water on anything, nor have I experienced that white residue that many other humidifiers generate.
