Also, I would not blame the unit for mold. Chances are that mold spores are in some people's air, more or less, and they attach to the filter via the circulating air around the fan. The bad thing is, if the surface you put the unit on leans in a direction, the water in the shallow bowl will spill over the side and through the ventilation holes in the bottom of the unit. from Amazon.com I have tried several humidifiers for my son's room (Hunter, Vicks filterless, Kaz, etc.) and this is the only one I have found that has a great quiet setting.
