i was looking for a simple sound bar design that would avoid the 5.1 system mess and integrate with the sony bravia system (i wouldn't need multiple controls and multi-step procedures to watch tv).

the sony has a passive sub-woofer and based on my listening experience it sounds like it can hold its own against systems that employ an active sub-woofer.

Wize Buying Guide for Small Rooms
Looking to set up a home theater system in
a dorm room or small room in your family home? Despite the space constraints, you can set up a home theater just about anywhere. Make a list of the components you already have and what
you need to buy.
- What
devices are included
Many companies and retailers ofter home theater packages that include everything you need. If you already have some of the components, such as a DVD player, getting an all-in-one package is probably not cost effective and you might want to find a la carte items. But if you are starting from scratch, a home theater set can be convenient and relatively inexpensive. Make sure all the components you're looking for - such as a tuner, CD player, and DVD player - are included. Make sure your system can play all the discs and file types you plan to use (DVD, mp3, AVI, etc.).
- Number
of Speakers
For small rooms or dorm rooms five to six speakers should be suitable. This is enough to effectively create decent surround sound to heighten your movie viewing experience.
- Wattage
Generally speaking, more wattage equals more power. If you want to be totally submerged in overwhelming sound look for 500 watt systems. If you want quality sound that doesn’t make your ears bleed, 100 watt and larger systems are ideal. Remember it’s a small room, so a little sound goes a long way!
