I have tried to use them with and without music playing. Even with music playing, I have to turn up the volume really loud to drown out the now enhanced background noise. I would like to add,that I do own other Bose products with which I am very happy. I have a Bose wave radio and the Bose in-ear headphones. from Crutchfield.com I purchased this set of Bose headphones to replace a set I accidentally sat on and broke. Over the years, I've flown well over 750k miles with them, and I never leave home without them on an air trip! from Amazon.com until you need service or parts. Weak design cause the plastic sides to crack so they can no longer be worn. Bose wants you to send them in,with $100 and they will send you the same type unit back. No longer. from Amazon.com I had a little melt down with my audio-tehcnica ANH-ANC7's (couldn't get into the earpiece to replace the AAA battery). So, in a huff, I went to the Bose store and bought the QC-2's. I originally bought the audio-technica's because I wasn't going to pay the money for what I wasn't sure I'd use. from Amazon.com The one big design flaw is that you can't really wear these and expect to sleep, unless you're someone who falls asleep readily while lying flat on your back in bed and not moving. The same is true on airplanes; if you like to sleep with your head against the window or the next headrest, this will keep getting knocked off your ears or dig into your head, reducing the effectiveness. To deal with this and the portability issue, I did try the equivalent in-ear headphone from Bose that claims to reduce noise effectively, but despite their very high price point, I didn't get the same bang for my buck. Overall, I'm a very happy purchaser, and never want to go back to flying without these. from Amazon.com I'm extremely carefull with them and they have had very light use. From what I've discovered reading other reviews, it's a common problem and appears to be poor quality plastic and a bad design. Bose will replace them for $100.
