No need to cook on high. The cast iron grates take a bit of getting use to with food sometimes sticking but the grill cook book included sugested not burning off food after cooking but 10 minutes before you cook....brushing the grates with olive oil does help. I wish I would of bought the optional post if I could change anything, it would help to make sturdier.
